ELIC teachers are recruited from a base of over 350 universities and colleges in the United States and Canada. Applicants are put through a rigorous screening process to ensure that only the top candidates are selected for teaching positions. The minimum requirement for selection is that all teachers must have a BA in a professionally-focused field of study, although almost 50% of ELIC teachers have earned or are currently working toward advanced degrees in English, Education, or Linguistics. To increase continuity and to maximize the impact of ELIC’s continuing training, University Program instructors are asked to make a minimum of a two-year teaching commitment. Each new ELIC instructor is given three weeks of orientation in Chinese culture, cross-cultural communication, distinctives of the Chinese educational system, as well as practical and theoretical training related to Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). During the winter break, further in-service training is provided for all ELIC teachers. ELIC has also invested significant resources into stocking team libraries at each school with relevant teaching resources and periodicals.
