ELIC teachers are recruited from a base of over 350 universities and colleges in the United States and Canada. Applicants are put through a rigorous screening process to ensure that only the top candidates are selected for teaching positions. The minimum requirement for selection is that all teachers must have a BA in a professionally-focused field of study, although almost 50% of ELIC teachers have earned or are currently working toward advanced degrees in English, Education, or Linguistics. To increase continuity and to maximize the impact of ELIC¡¯s continuing training, University Program instructors are asked to make a minimum of a two-year teaching commitment. Each new ELIC instructor is given three weeks of orientation in Chinese culture, cross-cultural communication, distinctives of the Chinese educational system, as well as practical and theoretical training related to Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). During the winter break, further in-service training is provided for all ELIC teachers. ELIC has also invested significant resources into stocking team libraries at each school with relevant teaching resources and periodicals.
